Since the mid-2000s, various governments in the European Union have developed different return programmesin order to cope with migration generally and irregular migration specifically. While the 1990s have been labelled the ‘decade of repatriation’, the second decade of this century will perhaps be labelled the ‘decade of return’ in the future. This session will include papers that discuss return policies and their effects for migrants and mobility through ethnographic, historical and juridical approaches. How are return policies contributing to continued migration? What are the consequences of return policies on integration processes in European societies and in third countries? The panel is open for submission of abstracts.
